What is NAO?

NAO is one of the most widely deployed humanoid robots. Its maker reports more than 20,000 units in use and over 3,600 scientific publications built on the platform. It is small (58 cm, 5.48 kg) and fully bipedal, with 25 degrees of freedom across head, arms, pelvis, legs and hands. That makes it a common first humanoid for teaching robotics, programming and human–robot interaction.

NAO6 senses its surroundings with two 5 MP cameras, four microphones, sonar rangefinders, an inertial unit, force sensors in its feet and touch sensors on its head, hands and feet. It speaks and understands 20+ languages.

Programming ranges from Choregraphe's low-code blocks and the generative-AI NAO Activities tool for teachers and therapists to a full SDK in Python and C++ for researchers.

Where NAO is used

Education. NAO has been the standard robot of the RoboCup Standard Platform League for more than 15 years, with around 55 teams and 200+ NAOs at each competition. In classrooms it is used to teach coding, from block-based tools to Python.

Research. Its open SDK, stable hardware and large publication record make it a reference platform for human–robot interaction, locomotion and social robotics research.

Healthcare. Maxtronics highlights rehabilitation programmes (with partner Inrobics), paediatric care and support for autism therapy, where NAO's size and expressiveness help engagement.

Who makes NAO now: Aldebaran to Maxtronics

  • 2005: Aldebaran is founded in Paris. It later became SoftBank Robotics Europe, then Aldebaran again.
  • July 2025: Maxvision Technology Corporation acquires Aldebaran's core assets.
  • 28 Aug 2025: Maxtronics is established in France to continue NAO, Pepper and Plato.
  • June 2026: Maxtronics publishes the current NAO V6 datasheet.
  • 2026: NAO7 announced as under development, with more microphones, ToF sensors, pointing fingers, a torso touchscreen, a bigger battery and fully on-device AI. No price or release date yet.

NAO7 (in development)

Maxtronics says NAO7 is under development: 6 microphones, ToF sensors, pointing fingers, a torso touchscreen, a higher-capacity battery and fully local on-device AI. Price and release date have not been announced. Not a second URL.

Compare vs T1

How NAO compares

  • vs Pepper+: same Aldebaran heritage but a different product and different seller today. Pepper+ is a 120 cm wheeled greeter rented in Japan by SoftBank Robotics (per our Pepper+ page). NAO is a 58 cm biped sold by Maxtronics.
  • vs Booster T1: both are aimed at education and RoboCup. NAO brings a long installed base and a published datasheet. Our T1 page does not yet list published specs.
  • vs Unitree G1: a newer, larger research humanoid built for dynamic locomotion. NAO is smaller, lighter and centred on interaction, teaching and therapy.

NAO FAQ

Who makes the NAO robot now?
Maxtronics, a French company established in August 2025 after Maxvision Technology acquired Aldebaran's core assets. Aldebaran (formerly SoftBank Robotics Europe) created NAO. SoftBank is no longer NAO's seller.
How much does NAO cost?
Maxtronics does not publish a list price. NAO6 is sold on a quote basis through Maxtronics and its partners.
How long does NAO's battery last?
Per the 2026 datasheet, about 60 minutes of active use or 90 minutes of normal use from a 62.5 Wh battery. A full charge takes about 90 minutes.
What is NAO7 and when is it coming?
NAO7 is the next-generation NAO, which Maxtronics says is under development. It will add six microphones, ToF sensors, pointing fingers, a torso touchscreen, a larger battery and fully local AI. Price and release date have not been announced.
